Celebrating the humble slice, National Toast Day falls on the last Thursday in February.
Naturally out of all the foods to celebrate, toast has to be at the top of the list. A breakfast staple and lunch time favourite, the versatile slice carries a multitude of jams, marmalade’s and spreads. But, it doesn’t stop there, toast carries proteins, veggies, and soaks up sauces and drippings.
National Toast Day was started in 2014 by The Tiptree World Bread Awards to celebrate toast and all the bread it can be made with. While it is a UK organization, the day has found a following in the United States.
Day to day, we may take the slice for granted, but it offers the perfect medium for building the perfect breakfast, brunch or lunch. Add butter, eggs, honey, or avocado, maybe Nutella or peanut butter – there is so much choice at your fingertips.
Perhaps you love brown bread, cinnamon raisin or whole wheat. Maybe you have two ends left, some believe this makes the best kind of toast (I am one of them). So, however you choose to celebrate, raise a toast to your toast today.
